Okayyy, I Couldn't Just Disappear.

Okayyy, I Couldn't Just Disappear.

I was gonna just say, “Flock it” and disappear into the analog ether. But, I still like telling stories without doing all the work to make something physical. My plan is to mostly just make zines from here on out, but I am still figuring that out. The general approach will be to make a zine about a weaving project or a particularly fun bike quest. I am mostly writing up those quests for underground cycling magazines, because I want the cred that teenage me would love. hehe. It makes teenage me feel cool to be writing for magazines whose editors I really respect. Do you ever look at the life you created for yourself and enter into an 80s sports movie montage where you are fist thrusting into the air in a sweatsuit? That’s how writing my little stories for magazines, thinking about making a weaving zine, and making woven things for people makes me feel. But, not like rocky. Think more like neon jazzercise gone nuts.

I mostly have just been up to weaving hijinx. Now that I don’t sell stuff and shut down the business side of this project, I am free to just terrorize people with woven gifts. I have been sending out a bunch of bookmarks to people with cool deadstock churro yarn from Weaving Southwest. I made a baby woven quilt and put together a “Learn how to weave with Grandpa Jimblers (My new alter-ego)” kit full of a hardwood loom, a shed stick crafted by a guy named Stephen, a Susan Bates metal weaving needle, two sets of hemp warp, and a menagerie of warm-toned yarn. I threw in the obligatory “Why Self-Publish in Times of Fascism” zine by Marc Fisher of Public Collectors and Half Letter Press. We ended up taking some time in the evening during the week to do the class. In typical fashion, I kept on going like crazy tangents about like each thing we ended up talking about. Lucky for me, Ben was also a deep sea diver and indulged my proclivity to complete empty my brain while teaching something.

Journal Time, Excellent!

Lily and I have synched our hobbies back up with our recent journaling kick. It has been and always will be such an important thing for us to go analog, be analog, and choose analog, especially now. This has been even more relevant for me as they are furloughing us at my job and proposing to lay people off. Despite cutting personnel, they are going to ask us to lean into Arti inteli to try and make up the gap with the loss of people to keep the same level of “service.” It’s dystopian out there, so I am just leaning into my photography, my music, fiber work, and my journaling. This is my page from most father’s day today, which included a bike ride, a really cool new delfonics journaling kit, sesame tofu with steamed broccoli and hot and sour soup, gardening, mowing the lawn, making art, and cleaning the chain on my bike, replacing a shoe lace on my leather cycling shoes, and cleaning.

Lily got us one of the fuji instamax printers, so we can print stuff right off our phones and then put them into our journal pages. I kid you not, Lily’s pages look like she’s been journaling for like a decade. That’s not shocking though. When we both took the tapestry weaving class, Sarah Nuebert was vibin’ with what Lily was putting down. That’s why I always tell people that Lily is like an artistic savant of some sort and I am just Olde Club-handed Jimblers. hehehe. I really liked that portal of fence that they created to help people get around colfax while they are building the Bus Rapid Transit out. It makes me want to make a sticker that says, “This is a sign. Your new life starts this way.” to put next to the portal opening. I usually will reserve shots for the fuji printer if I am running out of film on my polaroid camera on a ride. I also like taking photos of lily, juju, and I to print out. It’s also nice to have a backup for when I get home, so I am not carrying around a bunch of film packs.

I mostly just write down the albums I listen to each day, the oracle card I pull, fun little inspiring ideas I have had. I use it mostly to replace what I would post on the internet. It’s fun to just keep stuff more for myself and have a little cycle of creativity going. Surprisingly, working out the muscles in my fingers and working on my hand eye coordination in writing legibly has been one of the fun things I didn’t think I would enjoy that much. I have mostly been listening to a bunch of releases on cassette labels like Constellation Tatsu, Ransom Note, and Moon Glyph Records. Right this moment, I am listening to the wonderful record “The Rain in the Trees” by Graintable, who has been a big inspiration to get back into cassette collection.

I like saying things like, “This essay is possible by readers like you,” but if I am honest, this essay is made possible by the music I listen to. hehe. That is especially the case as this is all free now. Even the two years of previous essays which included a bunch of paywalled stuff is free now. So, go hogwild, hoss. I am 100% powered by all the fantastic awe that I am abled to build up by living analog and listening to tunes.

Quest Mode Engaged

So, Marcus of probably riding, one of my cool bike buds on the web, referenced questing in one of their recent videos. It was cool to see people care about and use that topic. Big up to the homie M.Graves (See interview below for the details) for teaching me about questing and letting me bother them for an interview. It's been one of my life’s true joys to run around with that concept and let it change how I interact

"Reason Tatters"
I have been so tired this week. When I say so tired, I mean like draggggging my elbows, forearms, backs of my hands, and forehead on the ground as I walk tired. At first, I thought maybe that I was just overwhelmed with all the stuff I have going on. It could be that, but there has to be some emotional baggage I am carrying around that makes my cup spil…

with the world on an everyday basis. The Magic is indeed high, the vibes crystalline, and the quests of vital importance to the realm are resplendent. I just had to shout out the big homie though, because its not like I or anybody owns questing. We all just get to contribute to the quest culture in the hopes of creating a non-hierarchal, horizontal culture where we all get to weave the meanings we create together into a rich tapestry of life. Well, that’s what I got cooking in my next installment of the quest annals. I submitted a photo essay to Chains of Strength magazine on Saturday. I hope they accept it, but I will bother my buddy Isaac Ramos of Peace Sports if they don’t. Heck, maybe even Adom would like it. But, I hope I won’t have to worry about that.

I have a photo essay for y’all to celebrate being back here. They are shots mostly from today’s bike quest to circumnavigate the three eastside parks and see what people were up to on a 96 degree day, but there are a few sprinkled in from other quests. All music on today’s ride was brought to us by Doomtree crew’s albums. All shots are Polaroid Color 600 film shot with a Polaroid now gen 2 camera.

Ok, Lily and I are bringing baby brother home with week, so I have no idea when I will be back. However, it prolly won’t be that long. In the mean time, go read my old essay, “No Time for Man Babies,” which sums up the entirety of my feelings on why showwing up as a dad is my number 1 priority in life.

No Time For Man Babies
There is nothing more satisfying than having completed the cycle of taking shetland roving, spinning it, and then natural dyeing it with leaves or roots. In this case, we dyed it with dried nettle leaf that one might get from the apothecary. Nettle’s magical properties of gentle boundary setting are perfect for a lot of my fiber spell work. Just as I…

I hope all is well with you, dear reader.

Best,

James
